A 35-year-old mother from Didcot is organizing a raffle to raise funds for breast cancer charities as she prepares for a preventive double mastectomy.
Ellie Challis Faces High Risk Due to Genetic Condition
Ellie Challis is scheduled to undergo surgery to remove both breasts in an effort to lower her 87% risk of developing breast cancer. This elevated risk is linked to a genetic condition known as PTEN.
PTEN is a tumour suppressor gene responsible for producing a protein that regulates cell growth and division. When this gene malfunctions, it significantly raises the risk of cancer and other health complications.
Turning Challenge into Charity
Determined to make a positive impact despite her personal health challenges, Ms. Challis decided to hold a raffle to raise money for breast cancer causes.
“So far, I have raised over £1,000 and hope to add more prizes and sell more tickets,” she said.
Fundraising Success and Support
Ellie has collected £1,150 in donations through her Just Giving page, surpassing her initial goal of £500. Her employer, Oxford PharmaGenesis, has generously pledged to match all donations up to £500.
Raffle tickets are priced at £5 each. Prizes include a £20 voucher from Cook, a facial treatment from Glow Up Facials, and a snack box for four from The Grazing Company.
The raffle draw is scheduled for the week beginning June 16, and the winner will be notified by email.
