Lydia McLaughlin, known for her time on Real Housewives of Orange County (RHOC), has revealed the private health struggles of her late mother, Judy Stirling.
The 43-year-old reality star took to Instagram Stories on Monday to share the emotional journey. “My mom battled breast cancer for years,” McLaughlin wrote. “She lived two years longer than doctors expected. … She was very private about her illness and never wanted it to be a part of her identity. She’s the strongest person I’ve ever met, and I’ve learned so much from being with her on this journey.”
Producers Respected Family Privacy During RHOC Filming
McLaughlin starred on RHOC during the 2013 and 2017 seasons. She revealed that the show’s producers only learned about her mother’s diagnosis near the end of filming Season 12. Despite the late disclosure, the producers were “very kind to us” and kept the information confidential.
A Daughter’s Deep Love and Faith
In a follow-up Instagram Story, McLaughlin described her mother as her “best friend” and “the person I love the most.” She shared, “She meant the world to us. I am so grateful to be her daughter. I have felt so close to God during this journey and I have no doubt that she is shining brightly in Heaven. My heart is broken that she has left us.”
McLaughlin announced that her mother passed away at the age of 76. Less than two weeks later, she hosted a joyful celebration honoring her mother’s favorite things, including pancakes, confetti, and glitter.
“I appreciate the outpouring of love and support,” McLaughlin wrote while sharing moments from the event. “I am thankful that I am no longer alone in my grief. I am honored to be her daughter and will always carry her in my soul.”
Finding Strength in Faith and Grief
The reality star has been open about her ongoing mourning process. Through her social media, she expressed how her faith and Bible study have helped her cope, especially prayer for grief.
“I am no expert, but there is no set pattern to grief,” McLaughlin explained. “Be patient with yourself and allow yourself to feel all the feelings. One moment I was fine and the next I was crying. … I have faith that I will be reunited with my mom. I know God is with those who are sad and He is with me. He is with you too. Hug Him.”
Remembering Judy Stirling’s Joyful Spirit
Fans who have followed Lydia McLaughlin’s journey know how close she was with her mother. Both appeared in Bravo’s digital series Glitterville, which showcased their special bond.
In February 2023, McLaughlin paid tribute to her mother on Instagram, writing, “I can’t put into words what my mom means to me. She is the best mother, my best friend, and my sons’ world. She is full of joy and the embodiment of a free spirit. I love you. You are a miracle and I want to be just like you when I grow up.”
