Michaela Matthews, star of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, recently marked a major milestone in her health journey—one year since she had her breast implants removed after suffering from chronic illnesses linked to the surgery.
A Year of Healing and Reflection
On January 29, the 24-year-old shared an emotional Instagram post documenting her recovery. Along with photos and videos showing her implants, episodes of skin redness and swelling, and her healing progress, Michaela reflected on the difficult journey:
“One Year Free. I put it off for a long time (even though I only had them for 10 months), but it was the best decision I ever made for my personal health.”
She explained that removing the implants was the crucial first step in clearing the infection and bacteria affecting her body:
“Removing these bacteria was the beginning of my recovery and clearing the infection from my body. It’s still a long road ahead, but I’m finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel!”
Her co-star from Mormon Wives, Macy Neely, showed support in the comments, writing: “My girl is in recovery.”
Sharing Her Story and Raising Awareness
Michaela has been open about the challenges she faced after her implant surgery, documenting her removal process in a YouTube video. The video captures her flying to Los Angeles for the operation, the surgery day, and follow-up appointments with her husband, Jace Terry. Michaela even tried to bring her removed implants back to Utah but was stopped by airport security because the implants were not TSA approved.
Her struggle with chronic illness wasn’t featured in the first season of Mormon Wives, but Michaela has been candid on social media about her ongoing health battle ahead of the show’s September 2024 premiere.
On TikTok, she shared a heartfelt message:
“It took me a long time to realize that my disease does not define me, and I will continue to speak about it for those who are also suffering from it.”
The Toll of Filming While Struggling
In early September 2024, Michaela revealed on Instagram the physical and mental toll of filming the reality series while dealing with constant skin inflammation and frequent doctor visits:
“Filming the entire first season was not only physically exhausting, but also mentally challenging.”
“I was fighting to survive, not only because I was surrounded by crazy women haha, but also because I was really, really struggling at the time.”
She expressed a strong desire to raise awareness about chronic illness in all its stages.
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Reflecting on 2024 during a New Year’s Instagram post in December, Michaela shared:
“At the beginning of 2024, I quietly suffered from chronic illness while showing up on the set of the reality show as much as I could.”
She closed the post with gratitude and hope:
“Proving that my skin does not define me and that things will get better.”
Michaela Matthews’ story sheds light on the often unseen consequences of breast implant surgery and the courage it takes to share a personal health journey publicly. Her openness offers support and inspiration to others facing similar struggles.
