CARTI Cancer Center in El Dorado has expanded its services to provide advanced breast care to women in South Arkansas and North Louisiana, offering cutting-edge tools such as 3D screening and enhanced diagnostic mammography. This expansion is part of CARTI’s mission to make comprehensive cancer care accessible to rural communities.
Later this year, the center will also introduce advanced imaging and radiation therapy capabilities, completing its $19 million comprehensive cancer center. The expansion was made possible in part by $7 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding, secured through support from Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, former Speaker Matthew Shepard, Senate President Pro Tempore Bart Hester, and the South Arkansas Legislative Delegation.
“We are committed to ensuring that everyone has access to care, which is especially important in rural areas like South Arkansas where cancer rates are extremely high,” said CARTI President and CEO Adam Head. “This expansion will be a game changer for patients and their families.”
Among the center’s notable advancements is the introduction of Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM)—a diagnostic tool used to investigate suspicious mammogram findings and evaluate the spread of potential breast cancer. CEM can also serve as an alternative to breast MRI for eligible patients. This makes CARTI the first facility in Arkansas to offer this innovative service.
Dr. Shyann Renfroe, a board-certified and fellowship-trained breast imaging specialist, emphasized the impact of local access. “Decades of research have shown that annual mammograms save lives, yet too many women still lack access to these vital screening tools. By providing trusted, local breast care, we will fill this urgent gap and help improve outcomes for women.”
The center also provides 3D screening mammography and supplemental tools such as whole-breast ultrasound for patients with dense breast tissue. Medical guidelines recommend that women of average risk begin annual mammograms at age 40, while all women should undergo a risk assessment by age 25 to determine if earlier or more frequent screening is needed.
As a leading cancer care provider for over 25 years, CARTI continues to serve patients with innovative technologies and a commitment to compassionate, community-based care.
