Brooklyn, NY — Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, greeted an enthusiastic crowd Monday night as part of her book tour for Matriarch, her new memoir and a recent New York Times bestseller. During the event, CBS radio reporter Gayle King asked Knowles about her health following last month’s revelation that she was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer.
“My Health Is Amazing”
“My health is amazing,” Knowles replied. She explained that her diagnosis prompted her to make healthier choices. “I eat healthier now, I’m more focused on that. I want to be around them,” she said, referring to her daughters Beyoncé and Solange, and her grandchildren.
Reflections on Her Diagnosis
Knowles admitted she felt “very sad and scared” when she first heard the word “cancer.” “That’s why I put it in the book,” she told the crowd. She stressed the importance of not postponing routine screenings like mammograms. “We’re busy taking care of other people. We have to make time,” she urged.
Sharing Her Story to Help Others
Initially hesitant to include her cancer journey in Matriarch, Knowles decided the message was too important to omit. In her memoir, she recounts discovering her cancer after missing a mammogram and thinking she had been screened later than she actually was.
Family Moments Before Diagnosis
Speaking to the audience, Knowles recalled a sunny day last summer in the Hamptons with her children and grandchildren. She remembered seeing Beyoncé approach her “in a golden glow,” a moment that moved her deeply just before starting treatment.
Support for Beyoncé’s Tour
Knowles’s Brooklyn appearance came days before Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour opened in New York. Proudly championing her daughter’s latest work, she called the new album “a history lesson” and “the best song Beyoncé has ever sung.” Beyoncé is scheduled for five shows at MetLife Stadium before heading to Europe, then returning to the U.S. for stops in Houston, Landover, Atlanta, and Las Vegas.
