On the March 4 episode of her podcast Almost Famous, host Ashley Iaconetti shared how Katie Thurston’s recent breast cancer battle motivated her to discuss her own breast health journey. Thurston, known as a former Bachelorette, announced her diagnosis on February 15. Since then, she has documented treatments including chemotherapy and surgery, and she has advocated for early detection. Her openness inspired Iaconetti to address her own concerns.
Personal Checkup Led to Biopsies
“After having kids, my breasts feel different than they did before,” Iaconetti, 36, told co-host Ben Higgins. She added that her breasts felt denser, though she understood that post-partum changes are common. Still, she spoke with her doctor and underwent two breast biopsies.
In a February 20 podcast episode, Iaconetti recalled finding a “really, really big spot” during a self-exam. “I had a mammogram and an ultrasound when I was 22, and they did a biopsy,” she said. Both procedures came back clear, and doctors assured her she is in good health.
Encouraging Regular Self-Exams
Iaconetti said she already has a habit of feeling her breasts often. “I do play with my boobs a lot, so I can feel them,” she joked. She acknowledged, however, that she needs to be more diligent about formal self-exams.
Higgins, 35, noted the rise in breast cancer diagnoses among younger people. He thanked Iaconetti for opening up. “That’s something to talk about,” he said.
Expert Guidelines for Breast Health
According to the American Cancer Society, women at average risk should begin annual mammograms at age 40. They should also learn how their breasts normally look and feel and report any changes immediately. Many health experts recommend monthly self-exams to detect lumps, texture changes, or pain as early warning signs.
Ashley Iaconetti’s candid discussion aims to remind women—and their partners—of the importance of breast awareness at any age.
