There is nothing more comforting than hearing that a loved one’s serious illness is under control. This long‐awaited moment brings relief and tears of joy. Last month, we shared how newlywed and first‐time mother Eldorét Visser overcame stage 2 breast cancer with help from 85 generous donors on BackaBuddy. Today, we report that Eldorét has defeated the disease.
Crowdfunding Campaign Fills Critical Funding Gap
Eldorét’s health insurance covered only 15 percent of her oncoplastic surgery costs. In desperation, her friend Chantelle White urged her to start a crowdfunding campaign. Thanks to donors, Eldorét raised the funds she needed.
“I was too proud to ask for help. But Chantelle said, ‘We’ll support you.’ She was right. I cried every time I got the notification. The money allowed me to pay the surgeon and go in for the surgery. I was so surprised,” Eldorét told BackaBuddy.
Oncoplastic Surgery Removes Tumor and Reconstructs Breasts
On May 5, Eldorét underwent a nine‐ to twelve‐hour oncoplastic surgery. Surgeons removed the tumor, extracted lymph nodes, and used fat cells from her abdomen to reconstruct her breasts. She spent three days in the intensive care unit, where she battled nausea, low blood pressure, and fainting.
“I was very anxious before the surgery. They removed the tumor, extracted lymph nodes, took fat cells from my abdomen, and reconstructed my breasts. I spent three days in the ICU, battling nausea, low blood pressure, and fainting. But I made it.”
Eldorét was discharged on the sixth day. BackaBuddy reported that she must still limit her movement. She cannot lift her daughter, Olivia, or drive. Her parents stayed with her to help with school runs and household chores.
All Clear: No Evidence of Cancer
On May 21, doctors confirmed that Eldorét’s wounds had healed and there was no sign of cancer. She expressed deep gratitude to everyone who contributed.
“My recovery is going well. The word ‘thank you’ doesn’t seem enough to express my gratitude. You have changed my life and allowed me to spend more time with my daughter. I can’t thank you enough for that.”
Raising Awareness About Breast Health
Now cancer‐free, Eldorét plans to use her experience to raise awareness about breast health. She hopes her story will bring hope to others still fighting.
“God helped me get through this. I can’t wait to see what the future holds. I hope my story can bring hope to those who are still fighting.”
