Monyeta Shaw-Carter Beats Breast Cancer, Celebrates 45th Birthday

by Alice

Monyetta Shaw-Carter, entrepreneur behind Keep It Classy Nails and former star of Real Housewives of Atlanta, recently shared her experience battling breast cancer. Now in remission, Shaw-Carter is dedicating herself to raising awareness about breast cancer and helping women recognize early warning signs.

A Shock Diagnosis of Stage 1 Breast Cancer

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE on May 31, Shaw-Carter revealed she was diagnosed with stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma on November 8, 2024. This type of breast cancer is slow-growing and the most common form. She highlighted a troubling reality: Black women are disproportionately affected by breast cancer. They tend to be diagnosed earlier than white women and face higher mortality rates. Black women are also twice as likely to develop triple-negative breast cancer, a particularly aggressive and hard-to-treat type.

Early Warning Signs and Prompt Action

Nearly ten years before her diagnosis, Shaw-Carter had a benign breast lump removed. However, last year during a self-exam, she noticed an unusual sensation in her left breast that raised her alarm. She promptly scheduled a mammogram, which led to her diagnosis. She described receiving the news as “one of the hardest and scariest moments” in her life.

Choosing the Path to Recovery

Shaw-Carter quickly began exploring treatment options. Initially, she considered a double mastectomy, the removal of both breasts. After a favorable genetic test, she opted for a less invasive lumpectomy, which removes only the tumor and some surrounding tissue.

On January 27, 2025, Shaw-Carter underwent surgery to remove the cancer. She also took the opportunity to have her breast implants removed and underwent a breast lift. Following surgery, she completed 16 days of radiation therapy. On May 2, she marked a major milestone by ringing the bell to celebrate the end of her cancer treatment.

Support System and Gratitude

Throughout her recovery, Shaw-Carter expressed deep gratitude for the support of her husband, Heath Shaw, and former Real Housewives of Atlanta co-stars Kandi Burruss, Porsha Williams, Cynthia Bailey, and Shamiya. She also acknowledged the encouragement she received from her ex-fiancé, singer Ne-Yo. Together, Shaw-Carter and Ne-Yo co-parent their two children: daughter Madilyn “Maddie,” 14, and son Mason, 13.

Advocacy and Celebration

Now cancer-free, Shaw-Carter is passionate about encouraging women to prioritize their health. She stresses the importance of regular checkups and early detection, which can save lives.

To honor her recovery and 45th birthday, she held a celebration asking guests to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.

Congratulations to Monyetta Shaw-Carter on her inspiring journey and her victory over cancer!
