Christina Applegate Says Eye Bag Removal Was Her Only Surgery

by Alice

Christina Applegate has spoken openly about the pressure she felt to get plastic surgery.

On Tuesday, the 52-year-old actress revealed the “one plastic surgery” she’s had during an appearance on the MeSsy podcast with Jamie-Lynn Sigler.

“When I was 27, I was on a show, and one of the producers, a very famous person who produces a very famous show himself, said to me, ‘Hey, we can’t light up your eyes. You have too many bags under your eyes,'” Applegate recalled, noting that the bags are “genetic,” before continuing, “And then he said, ‘I recommend you get rid of them.'”

Applegate said that moment was like “people planting seeds in your mind,” leaving her with a sense of “shame” — and at the time, she felt like she couldn’t fight back: “You know what I did? At 27, the only plastic surgery I ever had was to get rid of my bags under my eyes. ”

During the conversation, the two friends, who both have multiple sclerosis (MS), shared stories of network executives criticizing their appearance. Sigler recalled an editor telling her that her walk “didn’t look right,” to which Applegate chimed in, “Then they’d have to f**king shoot us a different way. That’s what it was.”

The Insensitive alum also said she worried that speaking candidly about how actresses are treated on set might cause trouble for her later in life,

“We talked a lot about the fear of going back to work, and you know, I was like, I might want to go back,” she said. “And now I’m like, ‘Oh my god, we’re being so open about this, are they going to think I can’t do this? ’”

Applegate, who was diagnosed with MS in 2021, previously revealed that she had liposuction surgery on her legs when she was around 26. “I had a little bit of fat on the back of my legs,” the Emmy winner said on her show in May 2024. “Our doctor actually did it on me.” ”

The actress also discussed her experience with anorexia during her decade on “Bringing Kids,” adding that she “never” spoke publicly about her eating disorder.

“I wanted my bones to show, so I didn’t eat,” she recalled.

Applegate said her mom sent her to Weight Watchers when she was 15, just as the sitcom was starting to air. “She was always competitive,” the actress said. “If I got down to 110 pounds, she’d say… ‘How did you do it?’ The reason was because I had an eating disorder. I would eat five almonds a day. If I ate six, I’d cry and not want to leave the house. It bothered me for years.”
