Laurie Means of New London, a recently retired woman, found herself confronting a serious health challenge thanks to a routine but crucial decision. In October 2023, she took advantage of a $99 mammogram screening at Hannibal Regional Radiology — a choice that would prove lifesaving.
The mammogram revealed a suspicious area, prompting follow-up tests including an ultrasound and an MRI. These exams showed two concerning areas, raising alarms for cancer. A biopsy confirmed the presence of two different types of breast cancer.
Choosing Care Close to Home
Faced with a daunting diagnosis, Means considered her treatment options. After conversations with her family and weighing the pros and cons, she chose to remain near home at Hannibal Regional Hospital for her cancer care.
“I could have gone to a bigger city for cancer treatment, but the care I received in my hometown was just as good, if not better,” Means said. “Being here also means I can drive to all of my treatments. I highly recommend getting local care at Hannibal Regional. The care I received was amazing. It’s a great local hospital.”
Her choice was also supported by the fact that her daughter works at Hannibal Regional and trusts the quality of care there.
Treatment Plan and Supportive Care
Means began her cancer journey by quickly meeting with oncologist Dr. Kevin Palka, who developed a treatment plan involving 20 weeks of chemotherapy prior to surgery. After completing chemotherapy, she consulted with surgeon Dr. Stacey Copeland about surgical options, ultimately undergoing a successful double mastectomy.
Reflecting on her experience, Means praised the kindness and professionalism of the medical team: “I was a mess, but everyone around me was so kind and supportive. The staff at the infusion center always had a smile on their face and treated me like a friend. They made me feel normal during a very unusual time in my life. I was given a lot of resources during such a difficult time. They made sure I had everything I needed and answered all my questions. I had a great team that helped me through this difficult time.”
The Importance of Early Detection
Laurie Means’ story underscores the vital importance of annual mammograms in detecting breast cancer early when treatment is most effective. Hannibal Regional Medical Center is equipped with advanced diagnostic technology to ensure timely and accurate detection.
“By sharing my story, I want to remind women of the importance of getting a mammogram every year,” Means urged. “My cancer would have gone undetected otherwise. Get a mammogram. It could save your life.”
