When political satire blog Wonkette published a jokey post about Sarah Palin possibly getting breast implants, major outlets took it at face value. The New York Daily News, Washington Examiner, Daily Telegraph, E! and others all picked up the question and ran with it.
Van Susteren Poses the Question Live
During an interview on Greta Van Susteren’s show, the former Fox News host turned to Palin and asked directly, “Breast implants: did you get them?” The question came in the midst of a discussion about what Van Susteren called the “crappy mainstream media” and its habit of distorting Palin’s image—from “grizzly mama” to “saint.”
Palin Sets the Record Straight
Palin, speaking from a New Jersey mall lobby, thanked Van Susteren for asking. She noted that rumors about her implants were “all over the internet” and said she wanted to clear them up. Calling the bloggers and reporters who spread the tale “bored, idle” people with “nothing to say,” she replied:
“Uh, no, I didn’t get a cochlear implant… This reporting is as authentic as the stories that Todd and I are divorcing, that I bought a house in the Hamptons, or that Trigg is not my biological child.”
Frustration Over Speculation
Palin said the implant rumors force her to wear extra layers of clothing and waste time planning outfits “so that no one sees what I don’t want them to see.” She urged journalists instead to “pick up a shovel” and help clean the Gulf of Mexico or save a whale, rather than focus on “this kind of stupidity.”
