Susan Olsen played Cindy Brady for five seasons on The Brady Bunch. To keep Cindy’s iconic blonde look, the production team dyed Olsen’s hair every three weeks. She was only seven years old when filming began.
Frequent dye jobs: “They had to dye my hair every three weeks,” Olsen said.
Color shifts: In Season 3, her hair shade changed slightly in each episode.
Because of the constant chemical treatments, her hair began to thin. “They tried different things,” she recalled. “But then my hair started falling out. So I went back to having my mom do my hair every Friday night.”
Creating Cindy’s Curls
Cindy Brady’s tight curls were not Olsen’s natural style. “My hair is straight,” she explained. “So I have to use a curling iron all the time. Unless I sleep with it in, it won’t curl. But my mom is responsible for all the curls.”
Olsen joked about early styling methods. “In 1970, trying something different meant mixing all kinds of weird chemicals, right?”
Co-Star Memories
At a recent Chocolate Expo panel, Olsen reunited with co-stars Christopher Knight (Peter Brady), Mike Lookinland (Bobby Brady) and Barry Williams (Greg Brady). They shared fond memories of working together and of their on-screen parents, Robert Reed and Florence Henderson.
Mutual respect: Christopher Knight said, “We don’t want to let them down. That’s the core of a good parent-child relationship: the child doesn’t want to let the parent down out of respect.”
Genuine camaraderie: Olsen described a “real love” among the cast members.
Enduring Legacy of The Brady Bunch
The Brady Bunch aired from 1969 to 1974. The series followed Mike and Carol Brady as they blended their families of three children each into one household. The show remains a cultural touchstone and continues to enjoy reruns and new fan interest more than fifty years later.
