Selma Blair spoke to Us Weekly about her new relationship, what she hopes to take next in her acting career, and how she’s coping with treatment for multiple sclerosis, which her medical team initially misdiagnosed as a menstrual problem before realizing she had something more serious.
Blair talked about how she’s changed her attitude toward her appearance and plastic surgery. She noted that after getting Botox for back pain, she no longer wants to get Botox on her face.
“I’ve had 100 Botox injections in my back to strengthen my muscles, and that’s stopped me from bothering with Botox on my face,” she shared. “When you’re so busy with your health, you forget about your appearance.”
However, she also noted that even though she’s going through treatment, that doesn’t mean she can’t embrace fashion and have fun. She refuted suggestions that she was exaggerating her symptoms by walking with a cane and wearing high heels on the red carpet, reminding everyone that she can still be a woman and embrace her femininity.
“People will say online, ‘She walks without a cane; that’s a lie.’ We do things for a million reasons, so stop judging people,” she explained. “A lot of people get turned off by that stuff. Like, ‘How can you wear heels?’ There’s a lot of conflict. But the truth is, I’m still a woman. I’m still me.”
Blair also spoke candidly about quitting drinking, saying she probably would have never been diagnosed with alcoholism if she hadn’t because she was self-medicating and so disoriented that she didn’t fully understand what was happening to her.
“I couldn’t have been diagnosed with MS unless I was sober. I couldn’t have been a good mom unless I was sober. I self-medicated,” she said. “I drank too much in Mexico. I was delirious, dehydrated, hungover, and had no idea I had a neurological problem. I didn’t understand anything. It was horrible and humiliating. I had to grow up.”
As for her next chapter, the actress is ready for whatever challenges come her way. After filming the documentary Introducing Selma Blair, which chronicled her journey with multiple sclerosis, and appearing on Dancing With the Stars, where she gave viewers a glimpse into how people with chronic illness thrive, she says she’s “ready for a challenge” and ready to get back to work.
“I really want to do White Lotus, with Mike White, and be reborn like Jennifer Coolidge,” she says. “I’d also love to do a period drama, like Downton Abbey, or something like Joan of Arc and Mad Max. I’d love to do that.”
