In February, 28-year-old software engineer Neethu MS underwent liposuction at a private beauty clinic near Kazhakutom. The procedure left her with severe complications. Neethu lost nine fingers and suffered a cardiac arrest. She has remained on a ventilator for several weeks.
Police Case and Medical Board Review
Thumbah police have registered a case against Dr. Shenal Shashankan, the surgeon who performed the operation. An initial review by the district medical board found no major procedural errors. However, the ethics committee—including the district medical officer—rejected that report as unclear. It has called for a more thorough investigation into the surgery.
Clinic’s License Called into Question
Earlier police inquiries uncovered that the clinic did not hold a valid medical license at the time of Neethu’s surgery. Authorities are now examining whether the facility met basic safety and staffing requirements.
Parents Accuse Board of Protecting Clinic
Neethu’s parents accuse the medical board of shielding the private clinic. They claim the board ignored multiple irregularities in the surgical procedure. The family also criticizes the police for delays that allowed the surgeon to seek preventive bail.
Family Appeals for Government Intervention
Frustrated by slow progress, Neethu’s family has petitioned the state’s chief minister to intervene. They demand a transparent probe and swift legal action against those responsible for Neethu’s injuries.
