New South Wales Deputy Premier and Education Minister Prue Car has announced she will take personal leave for health reasons. A recent screening detected breast cancer, and she will begin treatment immediately. The 43-year-old informed the Prime Minister over the weekend of her decision.
“Recent screening detected breast cancer and I will now begin treatment immediately,” Car said in a statement.
Early Detection and Outlook
Doctors found the cancer at an early stage and are optimistic about her recovery. Car encouraged other women to use early breast cancer screening as a vital tool in fighting the disease.
“I look forward to returning to the position I have held dear since our government took office in March 2023—a position I love very much,” she added.
Previous Cancer Battle
Car faced a similar challenge in 2022 when she was diagnosed with kidney cancer. She stepped down as deputy leader of the opposition Labor Party at that time. Test results confirm the new breast cancer is not related to her previous diagnosis.
“I have faced challenges like this before and I am determined to beat it again,” she said.
Government Support
Prime Minister Chris Minns expressed the full support of the government for Car’s decision. In a social media post, he sent his thoughts and praised her strength.
“She is a fighter and I know she will face this challenge with the same determination and grace she brings to everything she does,” Minns said.
“I fully support her decision to take time to focus on her health and recovery.”
Acting Minister Arrangements
While Car is on leave, Courtney Houssos will serve as Minister for Education and Early Childhood Education and Minister for Western Sydney. Car will remain Deputy Premier, and the government looks forward to her return when she is ready.
