A breast cancer support charity based in Hull has received a £25,000 grant that will help it expand vital services for women battling the disease. HER Breast Friends, an organisation that has supported hundreds of breast cancer patients across Hull and East Yorkshire, received the one-off grant from the Pink Ribbon Foundation to mark the foundation’s 25th anniversary.
Founded by Survivors to Support Others
HER Breast Friends was established in November 2005 by Jane Jones and Liz Drewry. The two women met during their breast cancer treatment at Castle Hill Hospital and quickly formed a bond. Motivated by their shared experience, they decided to turn a difficult time into something positive by launching a support group to help others facing similar challenges.
Today, the charity is operated by volunteers and one full-time staff member, all of whom are breast cancer survivors themselves. Their personal journeys allow them to offer deeply empathetic support to women going through treatment and recovery.
£25,000 Grant to Drive New Outreach Efforts
The grant from the Pink Ribbon Foundation will fund several new initiatives. HER Breast Friends plans to use the money to:
Purchase a van for a mobile bra and wig fitting service
Expand breast awareness campaigns in the community
Improve logistics for transporting donated goods to local hospitals
Boost charity shop operations and fundraising events
These improvements will make the charity’s services more accessible and visible across the region, especially for women who may face barriers to accessing support.
Pink Ribbon Foundation Celebrates 25 Years
The Pink Ribbon Foundation is a UK-based grantmaking charity dedicated to supporting people affected by breast cancer. Its mission includes funding charities that focus on breast cancer treatment, early detection, and education. To mark its 25th anniversary, the Foundation awarded special one-off grants to selected charities across the country.
Jonathan Prince, a trustee of the Foundation, praised the work of HER Breast Friends:
“To mark 25 years of supporting breast cancer patients, the Pink Ribbon Foundation is proud to donate £25,000 to this brilliant charity. These grants celebrate our milestone anniversary and recognise the inspiring work being done across the UK to support people living with and recovering from breast cancer.”
Making a Big Difference for Smaller Charities
Funding from the Pink Ribbon Foundation is often a game-changer for smaller charities. It allows them to provide specialised care programmes, complementary therapies, counselling, patient advocacy, lymphoedema treatment, and even additional nursing staff or research projects.
Jonathan added:
“Congratulations to the Friends of Hull and East Yorkshire Breast Cancer. We are honoured to support your work and celebrate the strength, hope and resilience you bring to the breast cancer community. We hope to continue to support you for another 25 years too.”
A Positive Step Forward
The £25,000 grant signals a new chapter for HER Breast Friends. With expanded outreach and new mobile services, the charity is set to touch even more lives. As it continues to provide compassionate care and raise breast cancer awareness, the support from the Pink Ribbon Foundation ensures that no one in East Yorkshire faces the journey alone.
