Maya Lopez Opens Up About Surgery After 100-Pound Weight Loss

by Alice

Maya Lopez, daughter of comedian George Lopez, has revealed that she chose to have plastic surgery following a major weight loss. In a series of Instagram Stories on May 25, Lopez explained that the procedures were “something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.”

Journey to Lose Weight

Lopez said she lost over 100 pounds through a mix of exercise and the GLP-1 medication Ozempic. She added that she uses the drug partly because she has polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS can cause irregular periods, excess facial hair, obesity, and infertility, and affects up to 15 percent of women, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Types of Procedures

To address loose skin after her weight loss, Lopez underwent two main surgeries:

  • Tummy tuck, which removes excess skin and tightens abdominal muscles

The American Board of Plastic Surgery notes that skin-removal procedures also include neck lifts and full body lifts.

Fluctuating Weight and Self-Image

Lopez described her weight as “fluctuated” over the years. “I’ve lost 30 pounds and gained 20 pounds,” she said. “To be honest, I’ve probably lost and gained over 300 pounds in my life, and my body reflects it.” She added that loose skin sometimes made her uncomfortable and that her daughters “haven’t gotten the look I’d like them to look.”

Paying Out of Pocket

Because health insurance often excludes cosmetic skin-removal surgery, Lopez paid for her procedures herself. “I’m so grateful that I could afford it,” she said. “I’m so happy… I’m crying tears of joy.”

Honesty and Advocacy

Lopez co-created and wrote for NBC’s recently canceled sitcom The Lopez’s, which was based on her relationship with her father. She said she wants to use her platform to talk openly about women’s health. “I put my life on screen,” she said. “We can talk about it. That’s where I want my platform to go.”

Embracing Her Curves

Lopez emphasized that her surgery was not about becoming a size 0. “I love my curves,” she said. “I don’t want to get rid of my curves. This is not about getting rid of my curves. It’s definitely better for me.” She added that feeling more comfortable in her body may help her work and find success in Hollywood, but that she will always set her own standards.
