ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL – In a surprising trend, even with high interest rates and tightened budgets, Americans showed a strong inclination towards cosmetic procedures as part of their self-care regimens in 2023. This revelation comes from the 2023 ASPS Procedural Statistics, recently released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons® (ASPS) in collaboration with its endorsed partner, CosmetAssure®. The comprehensive report delves into the trends that have either propelled or hindered the growth of various procedures over the past year.
According to the data, plastic surgeries witnessed a 5 percent increase, while minimally invasive procedures rose by 7 percent compared to the previous year. ASPS President Steven Williams, MD, commented on the findings, stating, “Although the rapid surge in plastic surgery immediately following the pandemic has leveled off, the demand for aesthetic procedures remains relatively strong.” He emphasized the importance for patients to prioritize education and safety by choosing board-certified plastic surgeons. With the proliferation of information on social media and paid advertisements, discerning quality care has become an even more crucial task for consumers.

Breast augmentation followed closely, with 304,181 procedures, a 2 percent rise. For reconstructive procedures, of which there were nearly 1.02 million in 2023, tumor removal (including skin cancer) was the most common, with 351,591 procedures, a 2 percent increase. Hand surgery, breast reconstruction, maxillofacial surgery, and scar revision also featured in the top five, with growth rates varying from 1 to 4 percent.
Shifting Trends and the Emergence of New Aesthetic Desires
Minimally invasive procedures have firmly established their popularity, growing at a faster pace than surgical ones. The allure of these treatments lies in technological advancements, cost-effectiveness, subtle results, and minimal recovery time. Neuromodulator injections, in particular, continue to attract a wide range of patients. While the 40 – 54 age group accounted for over 56 percent of such injections, younger age groups, especially those between 20 – 29 and 30 – 39, showed significant increases, reflecting the trend of younger individuals seeking preventative Botox. Male patients also contributed to the growth, with a 5 percent rise in neuromodulator treatments.
Facial and neck procedures have emerged as focal points for those looking to enhance their appearance. Facelifts saw an 8 percent year – over – year increase in 2023, outpacing the growth rate of the previous three – year period from 2019 to 2022. Neck lifts and forehead lifts also experienced growth, despite some fluctuations in earlier years. Additionally, submental liposuction, aimed at refining the jawline, increased by 6 percent, possibly due to complications arising from the overuse of hyaluronic acid fillers.
The concept of the “ballet body,” characterized by a harmonious, proportionate, and elegantly contoured physique, has gained traction. A combination of surgical and non – surgical procedures, including liposuction, breast augmentation, and noninvasive fat reduction, is being used to achieve this desired body shape. Liposuction remained the most in – demand plastic surgery procedure in 2023, and breast enhancement procedures, such as augmentation, lifts, and reductions, all showed growth, reflecting changing aesthetic preferences.
Overall, patients are increasingly adopting a holistic approach to body enhancement, combining surgical and noninvasive treatments. This trend is particularly evident among millennials, who have integrated cosmetic procedures into their self – care routines, using them to address issues that diet and exercise alone cannot resolve. Their acceptance and openness about plastic surgery have also played a role in normalizing these procedures as part of overall health and confidence – building, influencing other generations in the process.
