In the first months of 2025, the Thoracic Surgery Clinic at the University Clinical Center of Kosovo (UCCK) performed 176 chest surgeries, with 125 patients diagnosed with breast cancer.
The head of the clinic, Dr. Nazmi Kolgeci, shared the data in a statement to Economic Online, highlighting not just the growing number of cases, but also a major medical breakthrough that has changed treatment outcomes for many women.
New Surgical Method Helps Preserve Breasts
Dr. Kolgeci announced the successful implementation of a modern procedure known as “Sentinel”, which has allowed many patients to avoid full mastectomy.
“This year, we had several cases where the breast was preserved,” he said. “Thanks to the Sentinel technique, 22 women were saved from undergoing mastectomy. In the past, these cases would have required complete removal of the breast.”
He emphasized the importance of this method, explaining that it marks a major improvement in breast cancer treatment at UCCK.
Rise in Breast Cancer Cases Noted
Dr. Kolgeci noted that breast cancer cases fluctuate month to month but said the overall trend is rising compared to previous years.
He linked the increase in cases to multiple factors, including genetic risk, lifestyle choices, and dietary habits.
Call for Early Detection and Awareness
Dr. Kolgeci urged women to be proactive about their health. He emphasized the importance of regular medical check-ups, saying early diagnosis can save lives and help patients avoid radical treatments like mastectomy.
“Awareness and early detection are essential,” he said. “We want women to understand that early exams can make all the difference.”
