Kate Beckinsale has spoken out against online bullying and called on the public to stop speculating about her appearance. The 50-year-old actress shared a lengthy post on Instagram in response to the public’s persistent allegations that she has “changed beyond recognition” after plastic surgery. In it, Beckinsale claimed that the endless speculation is actually “subtle and malicious” bullying. The actress then spoke out about her health-related anxieties and claimed that she has never had any plastic surgery.
“I hate to talk about this because I hate to join in this discussion, but I’m going to say it anyway because any kind of insidious bullying takes its toll over time,” Beckinsale said in the post, which was accompanied by videos of her in her 20s and this year. “These videos can be 20 years apart, or even longer. Every time I post – which has been going on since I was about 30, by the way – I’m accused of having unrecognisable plastic surgery/Botox/fillers/obsession with looking younger, which is a really annoying and insidious form of bullying.”
She added: “I haven’t done anything – I’ve even had a plastic surgeon specifically say I haven’t done anything, but every time I still get ‘OMG you’re unrecognisable. OMG surgery! OMG you don’t look like yourself!’ It happens all the time, and it’s usually women who are doing it.”
Beckinsale then explained that she’s not actually worried about looking older. In fact, she revealed that she suffered from severe health anxiety when she was younger.
“I don’t worry too much about aging – my dad died when I was five, and I suffered from severe anxiety and panic attacks for most of my teenage years and into my twenties, fearing I would die of a heart attack, frequent visits to the emergency room, and at that point, anxiety was almost the only thing that plagued me,” she wrote. “One of the main reasons I was bullied was because I was not considered ok with getting older, which is so ironic when my biggest fear was that I never thought I would make it to my twenties.”
Beckinsale went on to explain that her appearance had changed because of natural aging, tanning, and changes in makeup techniques. Finally, the actress pleaded with the trolls to stop commenting.
“I posted this knowing that this would do absolutely nothing,” she wrote. “It’s not going to stop. But I also posted this because, no matter how someone looks, constantly blaming them for something they didn’t do, or obsessing about youth when I’m actually obsessed with how to get over a loss, is bullying. Please stop now.”
The post came shortly after Beckinsale experienced an undisclosed health scare that may have been related to a “stomach problem.” Beckinsale posted a photo of herself in a hospital bed back in March and made her first public appearance in April.
“It’s been a tough year,” she told People at the event. “Because my parents are not well, my cats… a lot of things have happened. So it’s nice to be here and see people and exchange ideas. I think it’s been a tough year for everyone.”
