Louisa Anderson-Roy, a 42-year-old mother of six from Brighton, endured three life-threatening infections after breast augmentations. Her first surgery, offered free in Istanbul two decades ago, left her with a hole in her nipple and sepsis.
Ten years later, she traveled to London for corrective surgery—only to face sepsis again. Surgeons discovered her PIP implants had been inserted backward. In 2010, PIP implants were recalled in the UK for using unapproved silicone and for a higher risk of rupture.
Despite having the implants removed and replaced five years later, Louisa suffered a third bout of sepsis. Each time, the infection brought her close to death. After the final removal, she vowed never to undergo cosmetic surgery again.
Tummy Tuck Abroad Brings New Confidence
After the birth of her sixth child, Louisa struggled with her weight and sought a tummy tuck. Unable to afford UK prices, she chose a Turkish clinic in August.
“They removed a boulder of fat from my stomach,” Louisa said. “It’s the only time I haven’t had an infection.”
Since the surgery, she lost four stone, dropping from a size 20 to a 12.
“I’ve always been fat, but after the surgery I felt motivated to lose weight,” she said. “I’m so happy with the result. It’s really changed my life.”
A History of Infection and Fear
Reflecting on her first surgery at 21, Louisa recalled,
“Ten days later, I had a little hole in my nipple. It got bigger and I ended up in septic shock. I lost a quarter of my nipple.”
Her second UK surgery cost £15,000, but within days she fell into septic shock again and required immediate implant removal. The third infection followed a £12,000 corrective procedure.
“Pus was pouring out of me. Within 10 days, I was fighting for my life,” she said.
Raising Awareness of Surgical Risks
Despite her family’s worries, Louisa chose surgery abroad again this year. She now warns others about the dangers of cosmetic procedures both overseas and at home.
“It’s important to raise awareness of the risks of surgery overseas,” she said. “I was also shocked by my experience in the UK. You have to be careful everywhere.”
Her story highlights the need for thorough research, strict after-care, and realistic expectations for anyone considering elective surgery.
