Denise Reyes, a 27-year-old Mexican social media influencer, has died following complications from a liposuction procedure carried out at an unlicensed clinic in Chiapas, Mexico.
Procedure Performed at Unauthorized Clinic
The surgery took place on January 26 at the San Pablo Medical Clinic in Tuxtla Gutierrez. According to reports from the New York Post, the operation was administered by Dr. Orlando Gamboa, who gave Ms. Reyes intravenous medication prior to the procedure.
Sudden Health Decline and Cardiac Arrest
Ms. Reyes initially updated her followers on social media about her recovery. However, her condition rapidly worsened. According to her uncle, Ammao Rodriguez, she began to feel unwell shortly after the medication and suffered cardiac arrest. Medical staff removed her from the operating room in an emergency.
Lack of ICU Facilities
Her friend, who was waiting outside, was told her condition was “delicate.” Because San Pablo Medical Clinic lacked an intensive care unit (ICU), Ms. Reyes was transferred to Manzur Hospital. Despite efforts to stabilize her, she passed away several days later.
No Underlying Health Issues
Reyes, who was the mother of an eight-year-old son, reportedly had no prior health conditions. Her sudden death has shocked followers and prompted a legal and regulatory response from her family.
Family Seeks Justice
Her uncle is now working with the Chiapas state health department and intends to take legal action against the surgeon involved. “Hopefully the authorities will give Denise a fair trial and that the doctor will pay for what he did,” Mr. Rodriguez told the Daily Mail.
