The American Hospital in Dubai has reached a historic milestone in surgical innovation, successfully performing the region’s first robotic breast surgery. The pioneering procedure was conducted by Dr. Marian Khatib, a highly respected consultant oncologist and head of breast surgery at the hospital.
A Breakthrough in Minimally Invasive Breast Surgery
Dr. Marian Khatib utilized the cutting-edge da Vinci robotic system to perform a robotic-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy—an advanced surgical procedure offering a less invasive option for breast cancer treatment and preventative mastectomies. This minimally invasive approach makes small incisions away from the breast surface, allowing for tissue removal and immediate reconstruction while leaving the breast virtually scar-free.
“This technology represents a significant advancement in breast cancer surgery and reconstruction,” said Dr. Marian. “Patients experience less postoperative pain, faster recovery, and reduced risk of complications, such as skin and nipple infection or necrosis. We are combining oncological safety with improved cosmetic outcomes.”
Setting a New Standard in the Region
The operation not only marks a technological triumph but also highlights a significant achievement for women in medicine. Dr. Marian is the first female robotic surgeon to perform this type of breast surgery in the region, setting a precedent for surgical excellence and gender representation in specialized fields.
Dr. Marian, known for her commitment to patient-centered care, brings extensive experience in breast oncology and reconstructive surgery. Her leadership at American Hospital Dubai is shaping the future of cancer care in the region.
Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery
The procedure was conducted at the American Hospital Dubai’s Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery (COERS). The center is a trailblazer in robotic healthcare, being the first private facility in the Middle East to install the fourth-generation da Vinci robotic system. It is also the first in the region to be accredited by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) in the United States.
Sherif Beshara, Group CEO of American Hospital Dubai, emphasized the significance of this achievement. “American Hospital Dubai is honored to achieve another milestone in robotic surgery with the first robotic breast surgery performed by a female robotic surgeon. This is a first in the region.”
He added, “We are committed to continuous upskilling and empowerment to ensure our surgeons and specialists are among the best in the world. This dedication allows us to deliver world-class healthcare services to the UAE and the broader region.”
A Regional Leader in Innovation
Since its founding in 1996, American Hospital Dubai—part of the Mohammad & Obaid AlMulla Group—has consistently led the way in delivering premium healthcare services. Known for integrating advanced medical technology and innovation, the hospital continues to redefine standards of care in the Middle East.
With this groundbreaking robotic breast surgery, American Hospital Dubai not only affirms its position at the forefront of surgical advancement but also sets a powerful example of innovation, skill, and inclusivity in modern healthcare.
