Online Pressure of Plastic Surgery?

by changzheng6

The practice of using plastic surgery to achieve and maintain a youthful, symmetrical appearance has a long – standing history. Cosmetic procedures first gained prominence in the early 20th century, largely driven by Hollywood actors who were eager to enhance their on – screen looks. Back then, the pressure to meet certain aesthetic standards was mainly felt by those in the limelight. However, with the rise of social media and the widespread popularity of selfies, this pressure has now seeped into the lives of countless ordinary individuals.

The impact of social media on people’s perception of beauty is vividly illustrated through the experiences of Catherine*, a 33 – year – old resident of Southern California. Spending a significant amount of time on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, Catherine told CNN in a phone call, “I’m watching videos of girls who are in their early 20s that are Instagram influencers and also celebrities who get the best work done. So, you’re looking at all these people who are a lot younger and they’re perfect, and you’re really chasing that, even though that’s maybe not attainable for the average person.” Her words highlight how the constant exposure to seemingly flawless images on social media can create a sense of inadequacy and a desire to measure up to an often unattainable standard.

For Kim Haberly, the decision to undergo a facelift was influenced by a combination of factors. One of the catalysts was her rapid weight loss of approximately 15 pounds, achieved through semaglutide injections. Around three years ago, she began to notice loose skin around her jawline, a concern she initially tried to address by using sports tape. Additionally, her job as a hair colorist played a role. Haberly frequently filmed her clients’ coloring sessions and posted the videos on Instagram. Even though she wasn’t the main focus of the videos, she would often receive hurtful comments like “You look haggard, you look old.” “That was probably more when the camera was lower. I would always know when I was going to get those (comments) because I could see myself when I posted that video,” Haberly recalled. Ultimately, she decided to have a facelift, hoping that it would “help the longevity of my career, which is really important.” Her story showcases how personal appearance – related insecurities, compounded by public scrutiny, can lead individuals to seek plastic surgery as a means to boost their confidence and potentially advance their professional lives.
