KFSHRC Jeddah’s First Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy With Reconstruction

by Alice

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC) in Jeddah has successfully completed Saudi Arabia’s first robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. The single-team operation marks a major advance in surgical precision and patient care. It promises to reduce recovery time and improve cosmetic results.

Advanced Robotic Technique

The procedure was carried out by Dr. Eman Khayat, consultant oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgeon. Using a state-of-the-art robotic system, the team made small incisions away from the breast. This approach avoids large cuts and manual manipulation, leading to less pain, fewer complications, and shorter hospital stays.

Patient-Centred Benefits

Dr. Khayat explained that combining nipple preservation with same-session reconstruction lowers both physical and psychological stress. “Our method shortens recovery time and preserves the breast’s natural look and feel,” she said. Minimizing visible scars also enhances long-term cosmetic outcomes.

Robotic Surgery at KFSHRC

Robotic-assisted breast surgery is part of a growing trend in minimally invasive oncology worldwide. It gives surgeons greater control when removing tumors in hard-to-reach areas. Patients typically return to normal life faster thanks to the smaller incisions and precise tissue handling.

Continuing Surgical Innovations

This milestone builds on KFSHRC-Jeddah’s record of firsts, including the country’s first fully robotic Whipple procedure for pancreatic cancer and robotic transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS). These achievements reinforce the centre’s role as a national hub for advanced surgical care.

Institutional Recognition

KFSHRC is ranked first in the Middle East and Africa and 15th globally in Newsweek’s 2025 Top 250 Global Academic Medical Centers. Brand Finance also named it the most valuable healthcare brand in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East in 2024. Newsweek designated KFSHRC as one of the world’s best smart hospitals in 2025.
