Former Bachelorette Clare Crawley, 44, has opened up about her private struggle with topical steroid withdrawal (TSW). On Instagram, she announced:
“Yesterday, I finally went live and shared the secret I’ve been hiding: my journey with topical steroid withdrawal. For those who missed the live, I just want to say — I’m still going through it all. I don’t have the answers. I haven’t made it to the other side with a sparkly bow. But I can’t stay silent anymore.”
What Is Topical Steroid Withdrawal?
According to the National Eczema Association, TSW is a severe reaction that can develop after long-term use of medium- or high-potency topical steroids. When patients stop applying these creams, their skin can flare badly. Treatment often involves immunosuppressive therapy or other medications to control inflammation.
Crawley’s Honest Reflection
Crawley described the mix of fear and relief she felt after speaking out:
“It’s terrifying to speak my truth…but it’s also deeply liberating. What I once viewed as shameful — my naked nature, my struggles, my limitations — is now something else entirely: a reflection of my humanity. I thought people would distance themselves from me. Instead, I feel more connected than ever. Because we all crave authenticity. We all crave to be seen — not only in our triumphs, but in our pain.”
She added that sharing her journey has become part of her healing:
“I’m still going through this, moment by moment. But sharing this experience has become part of my healing now. Thank you to everyone who reached out after the livestream. I’ll continue to share as much as I can. If you’re struggling, I hope this reminds you that you’re not alone.”
On Influence and Authenticity
In the comments, Crawley explained why she chose to share such a personal struggle:
“I can only speak for my own influencership in ‘Bachelor World,’ but most of the time women are judged and criticized for showing their rawest, most authentic emotions. Maybe they’re not trying to appear perfect, but rather putting up barriers to anything too personal and vulnerable in order to preserve their mental health.”
She concluded that “authenticity is beautiful” and helps her form a deep bond with her followers.
Visual Proof of TSW
On May 8, Crawley posted a photo that revealed how TSW affected her neck and arms. Captioned “What you see vs. what you don’t see,” the image showed peeling skin and raw patches. She thanked everyone for supporting her through this “real #TSW” moment.
Implant Removal Brings Relief
Crawley also shared that removing her breast implants improved her condition dramatically. She said the steroids she had been using to treat her rash were tied to the implants. After removal, her skin healed “a thousand percent.”
