The University of Hawaii Cancer Center will host the 11th International Breast Density and Cancer Risk Assessment Symposium from June 4 to 6 at the Sonesta Kauaʻi Resort in Lihue.
Special Public Event: “New Frontiers” — June 6 at 5 p.m.
The public is invited to a free event featuring research posters, heavy pūpū (appetizers), and inspiring talks from symposium speakers and cancer survivors.
Premier Global Gathering on Breast Density and Cancer Risk
Since 2002, this biennial symposium has been the leading global forum for experts in breast density and cancer risk assessment.
Context: FDA Update on Mammography Notification
The timing is critical as the FDA recently updated the Mammography Quality Standards Act, now requiring mammography facilities to notify women of their breast density, a major breast cancer risk factor after age.
John Shepherd, Chief Scientific Officer and symposium co-chair, emphasized the importance of breast density in breast cancer risk.
Symposium Highlights
Presentations by internationally renowned experts on screening methods, advanced imaging, and clinical aspects of breast density.
Oral and poster presentations on clinical considerations, accessible technologies, and awareness of breast density and risk.
Expanded focus on health disparities and environmental impacts related to breast cancer.
Featured Presentation
Mary Beth Terry from Columbia University will discuss “Why Breast Density Can Help Us Understand the Role of Environmental Chemicals and Breast Cancer Risk,” a topic especially relevant to Hawaii’s diverse environment.
