Katie Thurston Rocks ‘Tinker Bell’ Look Amid Stage 4 Cancer

by Alice

In June, the 34-year-old Bachelor star took to Instagram Stories to show how she’s managing hair loss caused by treatment for stage 4 cancer.

In a selfie video, Thurston wore her hair in a messy high bun with some face-framing accessories. She said, “I wanted to try this look first, like Tinker Bell, for a little while.”

Thurston admitted she had struggled with thinning hair and even ordered clip-in extensions. But she found that her “messy Tinker Bell bun” looked good and decided to embrace it.

The Impact of Cancer Treatment on Her Hair and Memory

Earlier this month, Thurston shared more about her cancer journey and its effects. She revealed that the treatment caused her hair loss and affected her memory.

On June 1, National Cancer Survivors Day, she posted an Instagram Reel to start a weekly journal. She said, “I wanted to do a weekly journal of my innermost emotions, like, whatever comes to mind, unedited.” She added, “Every day I’m alive, I’m a survivor. I’m like, come on.”

Thurston was first diagnosed with breast cancer in February. A month later, she announced the cancer had advanced to stage 4 and spread to her liver.

In an update video, she described her hair loss as “falling out in clumps” and “unnatural.” She wore a pink New York Yankees hat low on her head as she spoke about working on managing it.

She also shared that treatment had affected her brain function. Thurston explained, “I’m losing my memory.” She recalled a moment while returning from vacation with her husband, comedian Jeff Arcuri, when she couldn’t remember where she was from.

Thurston said, “They asked, ‘Where are you from?’ I looked at them and was like, ‘I don’t remember.’” She told Jeff that it had happened before, but she could not remember when exactly. The couple was able to laugh about the incident.

Wedding Moved Up Due to Cancer Treatment

Thurston and Arcuri married in a private ceremony at their home on March 22. The couple decided to move their wedding date earlier because Thurston was scheduled to begin cancer treatment on March 27.

In an interview two days before the wedding, Thurston said the decision brought them closer together. “You would think that would cause more hardships or problems for you, but it brought us together more than anything.”

She added, “Obviously, we wanted to plan a wedding, but chemo brings up a lot of emotions and takes a toll on your health, and we don’t know what the next year will bring.”

Thurston praised Arcuri’s support, saying, “This is a genuine act of kindness from Jeff in both health and sickness. He’s proving that he’s here to stay. He’s here every day, and he’s always surprising in his own way.”
