The rise of slimming injections like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro has changed how people approach weight loss. However, Angela Crosby, who leads a Slimming World group in Tadcaster and manages consultants in Castleford and Normanton, stresses that these drugs cannot replace lifestyle changes.
Angela became a Slimming World consultant in 1999 after she successfully lost weight using the programme. She explained, “Our members prove that lasting weight loss is possible without medication. Still, when people want quick results, trying new drugs is tempting. But true weight loss requires changing your diet, exercise, and mindset. Pills can help, but they don’t replace these changes.”
Research Confirms Need for Lifestyle Maintenance
A recent Oxford University study supports Angela’s view. It found that people who stop taking slimming drugs often regain the weight within a year. If they do not adopt healthy habits after stopping, they can regain all the weight within two years.
Angela says Slimming World focuses on lasting lifestyle changes. “Our healthy eating plans encourage members to eat everyday nutritious foods so they can lose weight without feeling like they are dieting. We also offer activity plans to help members increase exercise at their own pace. In our groups, members get behavior support to understand their personal habits and change how they view food, activity, and weight.”
With more than 55 years of experience, Slimming World believes it offers the best way to build healthy habits. Angela added, “We support everyone, including members who take weight loss medication while attending our groups.”
Overweight Population and the Importance of Support
Currently, 64 million people in the UK are overweight or obese. Angela noted, “Many people join us after trying and failing to lose weight on their own. They know losing weight is hard, especially without support. Whether you use pills or surgery, lasting change needs real help.”
Angela shared that members build strong friendships within groups. “There’s nothing more motivating than losing weight with people who understand your struggles. Groups help you keep going until healthy habits become part of daily life.”
Public Attitudes Toward Diet Pills
Despite more diet pills on the market, a survey of 2,000 UK adults found 69% are unlikely to use them. Reasons include not wanting to change their diet or social habits (25%), concerns about missing nutrients (21%), and simply loving food too much (20%).
Angela added, “New members often say they’re surprised they can lose weight without feeling deprived. In fact, a OnePoll survey of our members showed 85% were surprised they could still eat the foods they love while losing weight.”
Slimming World Members Enjoy Healthy Eating and Rapid Weight Loss
The survey of Slimming World’s 13,000 groups and online members revealed that 89% enjoy getting all the nutrients they need during weight loss. Over three-quarters (77%) now cook healthy meals for their families, and 76% are proud to pass on healthy habits. More than half (56%) were surprised at how quickly they lost weight after joining.
Angela personally lost four stone with Slimming World’s help. She said, “I wouldn’t judge anyone choosing injections, but I’m glad I found Slimming World. I’ve learned to make changes that stick. I’ll never go back to my old habits.”
She explained, “The group helped me understand why I failed before. Now I know my triggers and can plan to protect my weight loss. I’m so grateful to Slimming World.”
