Knots Landing stars Joan Van Ark, Michele Lee and Donna Mills open up about plastic surgery — and why the key to getting “subtle” results is getting it done at an earlier age.
In a new podcast, Knots Landing, which aired April 21, the former co-stars said they get a lot of questions from fans about plastic surgery and what procedures they’ve had.
“I’ve had plastic surgery, so I’ll just tell you how I feel about it,” said Lee, 82. “I would say to people who are considering it, do it earlier. That’s one of the things. I wouldn’t wait until you’re in your 60s to do it because it’s more subtle, little by little, less noticeable as you age and more natural looking.”
Mills, 84, echoed: “Yeah, I agree with you. I think it’s really helpful to lose your hair at a certain stage, like in your 40s. It lasts longer and makes you look younger. But don’t overdo it. If you overdo it, it’s ugly and horrible.”
Lee, who plays Karen McKenzie in the show, added that she had “eye surgery” in her 40s and said: “It was almost unnoticeable. In fact, six days after the surgery, I was sitting next to the president of CBS at a dinner.”
When Mills asked if she was “bandaged,” Lee replied: “No, I’m beautiful.”
She said that when she returned to the set of “Knotts Landing” a few days later, a female makeup artist helped her cover up the bruises.
“Because I had a little black and blue all over me, she said to me, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll fix it. I’ll fix it,'” Lee added.
Mills, who joined the show in season two as Abby Cunningham, the series’ biggest instigator, has also opened up about past treatments.
“When I was in my 40s, at Knots Landing, yes, I did pull,” she said. “It wasn’t very effective, but it lasted a long time, you know. And I didn’t do anything after that. Haven’t done it since.”
“But, you know, that’s why I say I think it’s best to do it then and then, you know, don’t think about it when you’re older. And, when you get older, the skin isn’t as soft, so you can look a little pulled,” Mills added.
In an early episode of the podcast, the two former co-stars talked about how Lee and Mills had a rough start on set.
“I don’t know if you remember, but in my first few months on the show, we had some little arguments. Do you remember that?” Mills asked Lee.
Lee said she did remember, adding: “I had the director’s brain and I was in control. Sometimes I crossed the line, but I think I knew what I wanted, and sometimes I said it too loudly.”
Lee remembered that she and Mills were filming a scene with Ted Shackelford. “All of a sudden – I had no idea what I had done wrong, I certainly never knew – but you and Ted looked at me and walked off the set,” she said. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, what just happened?'”
Mills remembered telling her: “Don’t tell me what to do. If you want something, tell me, but don’t tell me what to do. You can’t do that to me.”
“I think it was a step up for us. It made us better friends because we faced it and spoke up and moved on,” Mills said, later adding: “We started to understand and like each other. It wasn’t like that at the beginning, because it wasn’t.”
